Ikoma Tented Camp

Step into the heart of the Serengeti with Ikoma Tented Camp, where the simplicity of nature meets the comfort of a well-appointed camp. Located adjacent to the entry gate of Serengeti National Park in the Grumeti area of northern Tanzania, Ikoma offers an authentic safari experience that’s both rustic and charming. The camp is enveloped by the serene beauty of the savannah, nestled under the canopy of acacia trees, providing a natural shield from the sun while immersing you in the landscape.

Ikoma Tented Camp is more than just a place to rest your head after a day of adventure; it’s an experience that encapsulates the essence of African safari life. With 35 traditional Meru tents, each covered by a thatched roof, you’re ensured privacy and a direct connection with the wild. The design of the camp reflects a minimalist approach to luxury, where the focus is on the natural environment, the sounds of the night, and the panoramic views of the Serengeti plains.

The central hub of the camp, featuring a restaurant and a bar, is where stories of the day’s sightings are shared around a large, communal campfire. Here, the day’s heat dissipates into the cool night air, with the sounds of the bush providing the soundtrack to your evening. The camp’s atmosphere is one of simplicity and relaxation, where the daily changing 4-course menu in the restaurant introduces you to local and international flavors, and the afternoon complimentary coffee or tea invites a moment of peace before the evening’s safari activities.

Location:

Ikoma Tented Camp is strategically positioned just outside the Serengeti National Park boundary, about 2km from the Fort Ikoma park entry gate. This location places you on the path of the annual wildebeest migration, one of the planet’s greatest wildlife spectacles, as it moves between Kenya and Tanzania. The camp’s proximity to Seronera, less than 60 km away, and its relative distance from Arusha (about 395 km), makes it an ideal base for those looking to explore the Serengeti’s vast landscapes while avoiding the more crowded areas.

Being at the edge of the park means you’re not only close to the action but also have the advantage of experiencing the bush in unique ways, like walking safaris or night game drives, which are less common within the park’s boundaries.

Accommodation:

Ikoma Tented Camp offers 35 semi-luxury tents, each under a thatched roof, providing a traditional Meru feel with modern comforts:

  • Tented Rooms: Each tent features a private veranda where you can soak in the vastness of the Serengeti. Inside, you’ll find comfortable furnishings, a bathroom with a shower, flush toilet, wash hand basin, and all the essentials like soap, towels, and bottled water.
  • Privacy and Comfort: The tents are equipped with mosquito nets, candles for ambiance or power outages, and electrical lighting, ensuring your comfort through the night.
  • Scenic Views: The verandas offer stunning views of the Serengeti, making your morning coffee or evening drink a visual feast.
  • Eco-Conscious Design: The use of thatch and the integration of the tents into the natural environment reflect Ikoma’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

Amenities:

The amenities at Ikoma Tented Camp are designed to enhance your safari experience:

  • Dining and Relaxation: The spacious restaurant serves a daily changing menu, with options for bush breakfast or dinner on request, adding a unique touch to your stay. The bar area, with its large campfire, is perfect for unwinding with a drink as you share the day’s adventures.
  • Cultural and Wildlife Activities: Engage in guided game walks, cultural dances by the Maasai, or opt for night game drives to see the Serengeti’s nocturnal life. Balloon safaris, upon request, offer a bird’s-eye view of this majestic landscape.
  • Community Support: Ikoma supports the local village through nightly fees and annual grants, contributing to the sustainable development of the area.
  • Facility Support: Guests can charge cameras and batteries, ensuring they never miss capturing a moment. Cold drinks are served at sunset right to your tent, enhancing your evening experience.
  • Camping Option: For those seeking an even more rustic experience, there’s a camping site with basic amenities like kitchens, toilets, and showers.
