Climb Overview | Embark on an unforgettable adventure with the Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai climb, a hidden gem in Tanzania offering a taste of wilderness and stunning landscapes. Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano in northern Tanzania. It consists of a volcanic cone with two craters, the northern of which has erupted during historical time. Uniquely for volcanoes on Earth, it has erupted natrocarbonatite, an unusually low temperature and highly fluid type of magma. Detailed Itinerary Day 01 | Arusha to Lake Natron Depart Arusha early in the morning and drive to Camp in Lake Natron, the transfer takes around seven hours, here you will be able to freshen up and then visit Ngare Sero Waterfalls which descend from the Nguruman Escarpment west of Lake Natron. After your tour of the waterfalls, you will head back to the camp for dinner and overnight. Midrange Lodging: Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge Day 02 | Lake Natron After breakfast, you will be transferred to Lake Natron, an alkaline lake that serves as the principal breeding site for three-quarters of the world’s population of Lesser Flamingoes. After your tour of Lake Natron, you will head back to the camp so as to get enough rest before you trek up the mountain at midnight.Midrange Lodging: Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge Day 04 | Ol Doinyo Lengai trekking to Arusha Your climb will start at midnight and it will take around five to six hours whereby you will reach the summit in time to witness the amazing sunrise as it illuminates the Great Rift Valley. During your climb, you will be escorted by an experienced Maasai guide. After exploring the peak, you will head back down the mountain to the base where your driver will be waiting for you to take you back to the camp to rest and freshen up. You will then be transferred back to Arusha through Ngare Sero Maasai village where you will be able to visit the Maasai bomas and experience their ways of life. Detailed Itinerary The day concludes at Miriakamba Hut (2515 m), nestled in a picturesque glade with panoramic views of the plains towards Kilimanjaro. Day 01 | Arusha – Momella gate – Mariakamba Hut Hiking time: 5-6 h Distance: 14 km Ascent: 950 m Embark on a morning hike from your lodge to Arusha National Park’s Momella Gate (1580 m), guided by an armed ranger. Traverse open grassland, spotting buffalo and warthogs. The climb through Montane forest offers glimpses of wildlife like Black and White Colobus monkeys. Pause for lunch at the Fig Tree arch or Maio Waterfalls, surrounded by diverse birdlife. Descend to the crater floor, marveling at towering cliffs and the Ash Cone, before reaching Miriakamba Hut (2515 m) for a relaxing evening with stunning views of the plains towards Kilimanjaro. Meals: Breakfast| Lunch | Dinner   ACCOMMODATION: Mariakamba Hut Day 02 | Miriakamba Hut (2514 m) to Saddle Hut (3566 m) Hiking time: 4-5 h Distance: 6,5 km Ascent: 1050 m The trek from Miriakamba Hut to the Saddle Hut which lies just below Little Meru is a short day but a steep climb. You slowly ascend through the lush Montane forest to reach the halfway point of Elephant Ridge Mgongo wa Tembo – apparently, an elephant fell into the crater here!). From here you can enjoy excellent views of the summit ridge and across the crater floor. The path continues in a serpentine fashion steadily upwards through giant heather and other fascinating moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut (3566 m) where lunch will be provided. After a short break, you will proceed to ascend Little Meru (3801 m) as part of your acclimatization program. If you are lucky and the weather is clear you will be rewarded with stunning views across the Maasai plains towards Kilimanjaro. Meals: Breakfast| Lunch | Dinner   ACCOMMODATION: Saddle Hut Day 04 | Saddle Hut – Summit Attempt – Miriakamba Hut Hike distance 5km ascent + 18km descent, 4 – 5 hrs ascent + 6-8 hours descend, 1000m ascent, Altitude: 4566m Your guide will wake you at 00:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt at 1:30 am. The trail starts off on a steep grade from Rhino Point (3800 m) to Cobra Point (4350 m). In the last hour of the hike, you will scramble on a rocky ridge between the crater and inner cliffs of Meru. You will reach the summit of Meru (4565 m) at sunrise with spectacular views of Mt. Meru Ash Tray and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Enjoy your views then descend to Saddle Hut for a short break. You will then continue descending to Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) for dinner and overnight.
